Apple Introduces AI-Powered “Clean Up” Tool in iOS 18.1 Beta

Apple has unveiled a new AI-driven image-editing tool called Clean Up, designed to help users remove unwanted objects from their photos. This feature is similar to Google’s Magic Editor, available for free on both Android and iOS devices through the Google Photos app.

Limited Availability in iOS 18.1 Beta

Currently, the Clean Up tool is exclusive to the 3rd developer beta of iOS 18.1 and is only accessible on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Other iPhone models running iOS 18 developer beta 8 do not have access to this new feature, although they do benefit from generative AI summaries across all apps.

How Clean Up Works

Accessible via the Photos app, the Clean Up tool uses advanced detection technology to automatically identify and remove unwanted objects with a single click. After an object is removed, the tool employs a technique similar to generative fill to seamlessly blend the edited area, making the photo appear untouched.

Future Availability Uncertain

It is currently unclear whether the Clean Up feature will remain exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro series or if it will be rolled out to other iPhone models with the official release of iOS 18.1.

Timing Ahead of Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” Event

This update comes just days before Apple’s highly anticipated “It’s Glowtime” event, where the company is expected to introduce the iPhone 16 series, Apple Watch Series 10, Watch Ultra 3, a new iPad mini, and more.
