Airtel Introduces AI-Powered System to Automatically Detect and Block Spam Calls and Messages for All Users

Airtel has rolled out a cutting-edge AI-based technology aimed at significantly reducing spam calls and messages across India. This advanced solution, the first of its kind in the country, will automatically protect Airtel users from unwanted communication without the need for any app downloads or manual activation. The service is completely free and available to all Airtel customers by default.

How Airtel’s AI Technology Works

Airtel’s AI technology analyzes every call and message in real time to determine whether they might be spam. It assesses factors such as call frequency, call duration, and the behavior of the sender or caller to identify potential spam.

The system employs a dual-layer security approach:

  1. Network Layer: Calls and messages are first scanned by AI before they reach the user’s phone.
  2. IT Systems Layer: A second layer of protection scans for suspicious patterns and behaviors to ensure maximum security.

This AI-powered system operates at remarkable speed, scanning 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls daily. By processing around 1 trillion records every day, the technology effectively blocks up to 100 million spam calls and 3 million spam messages each day.

Real-Time Alerts and Protection

When the system identifies a potential spam call or message, it flags it as “Suspected SPAM” to alert users before they respond or click on any links. Additionally, if a message contains a suspicious link, the system scans it in real time against a database of blacklisted URLs, warning users not to engage.

The AI technology is even capable of detecting suspicious activities like frequent changes in device IMEI numbers—a tactic often used by scammers.

Tackling the Spam Epidemic in India

Spam calls and messages have become a widespread issue for mobile users in India, with many communications being not just annoying but potentially harmful, such as those involving scams or fraud. Airtel’s AI system is designed to drastically reduce this problem by filtering out malicious calls and messages before they can reach the user’s phone.

Airtel’s Commitment to Customer Safety

Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal emphasized that this new technology is part of the company’s larger initiative to protect its customers from the “constant onslaught” of spam. He reiterated that keeping customers safe from unwanted and potentially dangerous communications is a top priority for Airtel.

No Cost, No Hassle

Airtel’s AI-powered spam detection system is completely free for all users, requiring no downloads or manual activation. It not only blocks spam calls and messages but also safeguards users from fraudulent links that could lead to security risks.

This new initiative is expected to provide significant relief to Airtel’s customer base, enhancing mobile security and reducing the annoyance and danger posed by spam.
